Bumptop: An OS add-on in need of a form factor

Recently, Toronto based Bumptop.com came out with a beta version of their Bumptop OS, an add-on for Windows that takes the 2D desktop metaphor and adds that 3rd dimension.  I’ve been playing with it for a couple of weeks now, and here are my impressions…

I put BumpTop on my Windows XP based Acer Aspire One, not exactly known for it’s powerhouse 3D graphics.  but Bumptop performed very well with it.  I was using the trackpad to stack and fling documents, pinning photos to a wall, and watching online feeds with no problem.  In short, even on a netbook, the Bumptop performs as advertised.

People more accustomed to putting everything on their desktop will love it right away.  Personally, I’ve been more of an organized folders/discreet application kind of guy, so Bumptop took some getting used to.  After some getting used to, I really liked the way it worked and performed, but still can’t shake my old habits.

The whole time I used it, I couldn’t help thinking that Bumptop is really a metaphor looking for a form factor.

As everybody else here at rgbFilter will attest to, I’ve been waiting for a convertible netbook to hit North American shores for some time now, and with the Asus T91 having already hit the FCC, it probably won’t be long until Bumptop finds it’s place in this world.
