Should Alex Get an Xbox 360?
One of the regular segments on the podcast is about video games. Although he and his fiancée own a Wii, Alex is a straight up PC gamer. I’ve know him for well over a decade, and he’s always kind of looked down on console gaming.
While taping the game segment each week, Alex seems to have an internal debate. You can see his eyes glaze over, and he starts muttering that maybe he SHOULD buy an Xbox 360. He then comes out of his hypnogogic trance, gets all rational, and says “No No No. I’m a PC gamer.” or something to that effect.
I think he secretly wants one, but pride or some other factor is holding him back
Although it’s amusing to see this process unfold before one’s eyes, it would be nice to see the torment come to an end. To that effect, we’ve added a poll to the site, where YOU can help shape his decision. It should be noted that Alex is also the kind of gamer who upgrades his graphics card on a regular basis, and I’m of the opinion that he should bypass this semi-annual tradition and get the thing already.

NO I REFUSE TO GET AN XBOX
I would only really be interested in one to play Rock Band 2, and perhaps Forza 2, 3….which will not come to PC. Any other game I might be remotely interested in like GOW , Mass Effect, GTAIV etc have or will be coming to PC anyways, and on a nice display like mine with a high end video card they look way better…
360 has some cool features, but things like only multiplayer being crippled (look at TF2 on 360 compared to PC…No dedicated servers !), no mod support etc…if I was ever going to look at a higher end console it would have to be a PS3, simply because there will be games the Sony will never port to the PC, and it plays Blu-Ray movies
If you refuse to get an Xbox, why do you mutter under your breath in every single episode that you should get one?
Remember, I edit the footage every week, and it happens every week, even in our copious test episodes which never aired. 😀

I would argue that they look pretty damn sweet in our living rooms on our monster LCD TVs :\
err no xbox 360 game can look as good as a high end PC only game like Crysis on a 1680×1050 display running on a direct x 10 card….and yes the frame rate sucks for now…but the PC will improve every year. 360 next year will never technically look better than games that came out last year
so lets compare a game like Mass Effect….side by side the PC is crisper and cleaner looking…and the mouse and keyboard is a superior…no my screen is not a 40″ TV, but for the games I play and how I like to play them I prefer to be sitting in front of my monitor….
the list of advantages a good gaming PC has over the 360 is huge….the only negative for someone is the expense of the PC…which I am willing to spend…

Its pwnage os fairly strong…I run Crysis at 1920×1200 and my machine still reports a consistent 35+ FPS. Granted some features are disabled, but whatevs.
IMHO, 1st & 3rd-person shooters are best played on a PC, but there are times I just don;t wanna be a TOTAL hermit human and play games with friends online. Games like Rock Band or GTA 4 or Gears of War or Crackdown or even freakin NHL 2008. And I don;t wanna have to look up IP addresses or hope people are on any one of my 4 or 5 conneciton tools (E-mail, MSN, Facebook, GoogleTalk, old-fashioned Phone) in order to do it. Thats why Xbox Live (and PS3’s equivalent) is so great…I’m busily hunting down bag guys in Liberty City when a I get a little message from someone telling me they’re online. I hit pause and send them a quick message (thanks to the brilliant Xbox 360 Chatpad, maybe the best Xbox periph EVER) to let them know we shoudl rock out. They send me backa quick message saying sure, so I pop in the Rock Band Disk while having a voice chat with my buddy and getting set up. It’s really great, and IMHO, if I was really torn betwen a 360 and the PS3, I’d take the 360 simply because of Xbox Live (Even though I have to pay $40 for it.)
My point is, console gaming is just a different experience than PC gaming. Graffix on a PC will always be better as long as there are ppl who have to buy a new vid card every 6 months, you can’t compete with that. But on a straight experience comparison…console wins.
Of course if you bought a 360 then you;d have BOTH. But you’d be saddled with only the 2nd best card on the market for half a year. OH NOES!!
Like Rye said, the social aspect of console gaming can’t be beat.
There’s nothing like deciding to play games for an hour or two, and seeing friends online and simply saying “join in” and away you go.
