CBC’s “Pushing Buttons” – an in depth look at games and a Top 10 list
Video games have been garnering a lot more attention in the mainstream press these days, and it’s not just enraged parents groups concerned with the effects a Mature rated title is having on their 13 year old who’s playing it in the den.
Today marked the launch of a new feature on the CBC website called Pushing Buttons, which over the course of the week will take an in depth look at video games and their cultural and financial impact in Canada. Today is all about the history of games, and if it’s any indication, Pushing Buttons looks like probably one of the most comprehensive (an non-sensational) looks at the art and business of pixelated entertainment.
Over the week, they’ll cover the financial impact (Tues), social aspects (Wed), use of games in health and education (Thurs) and finally try to predict the future of gaming on Friday.
Of course, not all is perfect, as they’ve already listed what they consider the top 10 Canadian video games, and I’m not sure if I agree with the list. Then again, nobody can make a top 10 list that everyone is going to agree with. Also, while a lot was made of the big guys, and how Ontario is now actively pursuing video game developers, I hope there at least some mention of the thriving Toronto indie game scene.
