Boxee Box pre-order announced for all your pillaging needs
After originally announcing the Boxee Box for a spring release 2010, Boxee had to revise their schedule, promising the diminutive D-Link built media player for a fall release. The Box allows users to access content both on the local network, as well as access thousands of online sources including network television, Netflix, Youtube and much more (of course, some services are geo-locked). Despite some skepticism, and some hardware changes, it looks like they’re going to make good on the autumnal release.
When first announced, the Box was to be powered by an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, but apparently the internals had to be changed, as there were performance problems with high bitrate 1080p H.264 video, according to a conversation Engadget had with Boxee founder Avner Ronen The Tegra 2 has been replaced with Intel’s Atom CE4100, a low powered chip from the CPU giant that is more than capable of delivering true high def streams to your TV. The Boxee Box maintains its tiny, off kilter design, and will still include the two-sided remote that includes a built in QWERTY keyboard.
The Boxee Box has already appeared on Amazon’s site for pre-order in the US, though it was the Futureshop.ca description that caught my eye…
The Boxee Box from D-Link (DSM-380) is the ideal media player to transform your TV into a streaming home entertainment system. Pillage Internet goodness and watch it on your HDTV from the comfort of your couch. Best of all, no keyboard or mouse required.
Though I’m a HUGE fan of the Boxee software, which is available for free on PC, Mac and Linux platforms, I was a little surprised, and more than a little amused at the connotations that the phrase “Pillage Internet goodness” conjures up. For all you pillagers, Boxee Box will be available for an MSRP of $229.99.
